"We raided the house in Penampang at 11.35pm on Monday and the man is being detained for further investigation. This is the biggest seizure so far this year," he said.

The man is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (D) of the Customs Act 1967 for having prohibited goods.

Meanwhile, Voo said the unit would to continue to monitor such activity in the State.

"The activity is quite rampant now. We are monitoring it by conducting road blocks and sea patrols on a regular basis," he said.

Voo also said the unit is aware that ferries operating the Labuan – KK – Labuan route were involved in the smuggling of beer from Labuan FT, but the quantity was negligible.

CASH EXPOSES BUSINESSES ‘CHEATING’ IN SERVICE TAX

KOTA KINABALU : Many business establishments charging 10 per cent service tax to its customers are not paying the tax to the Government, claimed the Consumer’s Association of Sabah and Labuan (Cash).

A survey done by Cash over a period of six months throughout the State and Labuan revealed many of the establishments particularly restaurants, hotels and cafes were collecting the service tax, but did not redirect the payment to the Government as stipulated in the Service Tax Act 1975.

In a statement here Sunday, Cash said there were also some who are charging the service tax without the license from the Royal Customs and Excise Department.

Many of the establishments also did not display the service tax license in their premises, which should not be the case.

When asked, they claimed the license was being held by their "towkay" (owner).

Cash also found that many professional firms including printing companies, saloons or nightclubs were charging the tax but not in accordance to the actual rate.

Cash reminded consumers to count their change and should ask for the service tax license if they were being charged extra to pay the service tax.

Cash also called on the Royal Customs and Excise Department to conduct surprise raids on these outlets to prevent consumers from being cheated.

SELUDUP KASTAM PERLUKAN BANTUAN ORANG RAMAI

KASTAM SASAR KUTIP CUKAI RM300 JUTA

RM800,000 FAGS SEIZURE IN TAWAU

TAWAU : Sabah Royal Customs and Excise Department scored the biggest bust in smuggled cigarettes and tobacco this year with the seizure of 211,400 packets of contraband Kretek cigarettes and 200 packets of tobacco here, Wednesday - involving unpaid import duties totaling RM806,888.26.

The seizure which was valued at RM295,400 was seized by Customs officers onboard a speedboat intercepted in the Balung waters, near here, based on a public tip-off at 6.30pm.

When Contacted Thursday, State Customs Director Ibrahim Jaapar said they also detained four male suspects aged between 25 and 32, two of whom Filipinos, and a four engine, 1,000 horse-powered speedboat.

He said the boat was intercepted following a 25-minute speedboat chase between a group of six preventive officers led by Ab. Kassim Ab. Kais and the suspects.

The suspects attempted to escape upon seeing a patrol unit from the opposite direction, at about 6.05 pm.

The Customs personnel were conducting surveillance since 4.30 pm, he said.

Investigators believed the suspects were trying to smuggle in the goods from a neighbouring country, via the district, for distribution in Kunak.

"The cigarettes and tobacco were neatly hidden under a canvas cover in the boat," he said.

Cigarettes and tobacco were banned for importation under the Customs Duty Rule (Restricted Import Item), and those found committing the offence face charges under Section 135 (1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.

Commending the public cooperation and information that led to the success of the seizure, Ibrahim is hoping for more information on smuggling activities in and around Sabah waters, while promising full confidentiality of their identities.

On Nov 26, Customs Director-General Datuk Abdul Halil Mutalib said cigarette smuggling activities had cost the government RM4.8 billion in lost revenue this year.

He said an analysis of cigarette consumption showed that about RM6 billion in cigarette tax should have been collected this year.

"However, we only managed to get RM1.2 billion," he said.

"From now on, we'll be hard on the smugglers. If they have high-powered speedboats, we'll equip ourselves with faster ones," he said.
